This is not a Tune! post about the Greatest Song in the World, this is just a Tune! post about the tribute to the Greatest Song in the World. Fun facts about ‘Tribute’; first, the video features three celebrity cameos. Ben Stiller is one of the shoppers Jack Black accosts upon bursting out of the video recording booth, and beneath those demonic layers of make up lies Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl. Liam Lynch is also a passing shopper – he directed and edited the video but you’d recognise him predominantly from his memorable (though annoying) hit comedy song, ‘United States Of Whatever.’
Next, though the opening riff of ‘Tribute’ resembles the iconic rock song ‘Stairway to Heaven,’ reportedly the inspiration for the lyrics came from Jack Black playing Metallica’s ‘One’ to Kyle Gass, and their subsequent conversation that it was the greatest song in the world and that they had no chance of writing a better one.
And finally, despite its overwhelming popularity in the UK (if nowhere else than in my sixth form common room) it has never actually been released here as a single.
